Real-Time Ocean Data Buoy for Fisheries in the Bay of Fundy

Overview

EOM Offshore deployed a custom ocean monitoring buoy in the Bay of Fundy, a region known for the largest tidal swings in the world, more than 50 feet.

Designed and assembled at our headquarters in Pocasset, Massachusetts, the system was delivered in partnership with DASCO/Teramara Inc. to provide real-time environmental data supporting local fisheries and safe marine operations.

This rugged buoy system measures currents, water levels, waves, winds, temperature, and salinity, giving fishermen and coastal operators the insights needed to optimize daily decisions on the water. By improving operational safety and enabling sustainable fishing practices, the project demonstrates the value of advanced buoy technology in one of Earth’s most unique and challenging marine ecosystems.

The Challenge

The Bay of Fundy’s extreme tidal environment presents significant challenges for marine monitoring. Rapidly shifting water levels, powerful currents, and harsh winter conditions make it difficult to maintain reliable, year-round data streams. Regional fishermen and operators needed a durable, autonomous buoy system capable of delivering continuous real-time ocean data, even under ice and severe weather.

Our Solution

EOM Offshore engineered and deployed a long-duration buoy system equipped with Teledyne sensors to provide reliable, high-resolution data. Despite being covered in ice during the harsh Canadian winter, the system performed flawlessly, demonstrating the durability of both EOM’s mooring design and Teledyne’s instrumentation.

Key advantages of this solution included:

  • Rugged reliability: Operated continuously through ice and extreme winter conditions.
  • Real-time data: Delivered live measurements of currents, waves, winds, and water properties.
  • Fisheries support: Enabled safer operations and smarter decision-making for local fishermen.
  • Collaborative success: Partnership with DASCO/Teramara Inc. ensured regional expertise.
  • Proven sensors: Teledyne instruments provided consistent, high-quality data output.

Summary

This project highlights EOM Offshore’s ability to deliver real-time ocean data buoys and rugged mooring systems for the world’s most demanding marine environments. By partnering with DASCO/Teramara Inc. and leveraging Teledyne sensors, EOM Offshore is advancing fisheries support, environmental monitoring, and safe marine operations in the Bay of Fundy and beyond.
